A season of calm, rest, and the quiet return of light
In the Northern Hemisphere, the winter solstice marks the shortest day of the year.
Argh. It’s easy to hear that and think, More winter.

But here’s the part that people often miss:
The winter solstice is also the turning point. From this day forward, the light slowly begins to return.
It really does get brighter from here.
You may not notice it right away—but it’s real.
+ Have you felt how the world grows quieter and softer this time of year?
+ How the garden seems to pause?
That pause has a name.
For a long time, the loss of light made me feel, well, a little sad. I mean, winter — the length of it here in Kodiak, Alaska — can feel heavy. But learning about the halcyon days changed how I see this season.
The story of the halcyon bird...
According to Greek legend, the halcyon, or kingfisher, built its floating nest around the middle of December. During this brief nesting and hatching time, the gods were said to calm the seas so the bird and its young would be safe.

Those calm days—right around the winter solstice—became known as the halcyon days.
Today, the phrase simply means a time of peace and rest.
Gardeners and farmers understand this instinctively. The fields and garden beds are quiet. The soil is resting. Look around. Nothing looks busy—and that's OK.
In winter, growth tends to move underground. Roots store energy. Buds wait. The garden isn’t idle—it’s preparing.
And in that stillness, there’s a quiet invitation for you, too.
Do you really need to push right now?
Or could you let this season be what it is?
John Geddes captured the spirit of the halcyon days beautifully:
“I pray this winter, be gentle and kind, a season of rest from the wheel of the mind.”
— John Geddes
If you’d like to linger in this moment a little longer, I created a short video "reflection" on the winter solstice and the halcyon days that I think you'll enjoy. It's only 1:33 minutes long. Watch it here:
Thanks for being here, for being you.
